When To Rewrite Vs Summarize Your Writing

Rewriting is the right move when the content is right but the tone, length, or clarity is off — a message that says the right thing but lands wrong. Summarizing is the right move when there's simply too much information and the goal is to preserve the key points in less space.

A common mistake is summarizing when rewriting was needed — cutting length without fixing the underlying clarity problem, which just produces a shorter version of the same confusing text.

The reverse mistake happens too: rewriting a document that was actually fine, just too long, and ending up with something polished but still bloated because the real issue — too much content — was never addressed.

If you're not sure which you need, ask what the reader actually complained about (or would complain about): too long, or hard to follow. Those point to different fixes.

For anything important, it's worth doing both in sequence rather than trying to solve length and clarity in a single pass — summarize first to find the essential content, then rewrite that shorter version for tone and flow.
